1.  Waterfurnace Synergy 3D

Posted 03-09-2017 12:16
We've had a request to pre-build a hydronic mechanical panel and controls for a Waterfurnace Synergy 3D unit. I haven't installed or worked on one of these units. The installation manual appears to indicate that the control board in the Synergy needs inputs from a standard 3-heat 2-cool thermostat, and a demand signal (not a direct temp sensor signal) from an aquastat. Has anyone installed a Synergy unit, and if so, am I correct in my understanding of the low voltage signal inputs needed?

The hydronic portion of the Synergy 3D is controlled by utilizing a set of contacts re: aquastat or other dry contact

We have installed several of the Synergy units and a standard 3h-2c thermostat will work for the forced air heat and cool and the hydronic cycle is controlled by a single dry contact. There is a priority switch on the front panel that allows for either hydronic or forced air to have 1st preference.

Certainly the 3H/2C Thermostat manages the Water-to-Air Function while the water-to-water needs simple contact closure.  Our PHC Controls provide this function while also incorporating Outdoor Reset & Demand Enabled Logic, can also control supplemental heat on the Hydronic Side.

Finally, a "turn-key" hydronic control package that is built upon proven and reliable controls. Designed and built with both the customer and installing contractor in mind. The PHC package utilizes tekmar controls with a customized array of relays and time delay relays to control the heating, the cooling and domestic water heating as embodied in the Phoenix Hydronic Solution.

the hydronic switch on the Synergy 3D is a non powered switch.  You do not send 24v power through it, just connect it to the aquastat or an end switch from a zone valve or any other device that has a non powered end switch to act as a control.
The hydronic side can be set up to have priority or not, using the dip switches on the board.

I have stopped using the 3D and now install a series 7 and an Optiheat because my clients are interested in cost of ownership rather than first cost.

Thanks for your replies. Is the transformer in the Synergy unit sized to be able to power some zone valves in the hydronic loop, as in some standard water-to-water units, or should I plan on supplying my own transformer?

No it is technically not.  Waterfurnace request the use of their ZTK240.  Its simply a 75Va transformer but I like it because it has longer pigtails and spade lugs on it already.

Have you spoken with Doug at WF hydronics.  They will build a prefab panel for you if you would like.  Plug and Play.  Call waterfurnace and press extension 5.
