Oklahoma Anti-Freeze

I have a project in Oklahoma and have been told by some a well driller that methanol is not allowed for anti-freeze for geothermal wells in the state.  Oklahoma Water Resource Board is the regulatory agency as far as I can tell, but I haven't been able to get anyone there to call me back.

Can anyone confirm/deny the use of methanol?

Oklahoma Water Resources Board C-35 Rules

See page 21 item (6) it specifies food grade for the heat transfer fluid when anti-freeze is used.

Propylene glycol meets that requirement methanol does not as it is toxic.

If you go to and then go to the tab for water wells & then open the pdf for Chapter 35 – Rules just go down to page 21 & toward the bottom you will see #4 (under heading C) and it states:

    (4) Heat transfer fluid. The fluid used inside the closed-loop assembly must be non-toxic, food grade quality and approved for use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and a release of the fluid to the groundwater must not violate Oklahoma Water Quality Standards set forth in Chapter 45, OAC 785

This basically means that you cannot use Methanol as it is a toxic substance.

I cannot confirm if it is or is not allowed but it should not be in my eyes.  I can tell you many people have been hurt from the use of methanol from the vapors exploding.  Take away the danger aspect and it is still not recommended for use in geo/hydronic applications.
