ECM well pumps on open loops

I'm bidding out a geothermal retrofit on a home with a well. The homeowner is interested in replacing their submersible well pump with an ECM unit for the energy savings (current pump pulls 6 amps and the home only needs 3 tons). I'm looking for any recommendations or experience others have had with ECM submersible pumps - been looking at the Grundfos SQE line, but have heard some warnings about the reliability of the controller for those pumps, in particular that 20% or so of them fail within 3 years. I'm having a hard time finding energy usage for other ECM pumps from their manufacturers.

Anyone using ECM well pumps with their geo installations? What kind of reliability are you experiencing?

I've had one in my house since 2001 hooked up to a 5 ton unit.  Only problem I've had with the pump or controller was when we lost power the first time.  When power was restored the controller indicated a need for a service call.  I simply did a "reboot" of the power via the disconnect switch.  This was the only time this happened.  I have had issue with the little 2 gallon well tank they provide.  First one lasted about 4 years.  Since then it tends to fail every 2 to 3 years.  The last time I installed a 6 gallon tank and it has lasted a lot longer (so far).  I think the issue is based on bladder position when the pump stops and thermal expansion of the domestic hot water heating.

    Just my experience.

    Good Day Folks,

I have been in the geothermal consulting business since 1984. In 2004 we built a new house. we have two geothermal heat pumps a 4 ton and a 2.5 ton. I elected to use our well water system.
The well is fitted with a 30 gpm Goulding pump, we had elected to go with a conventional residential system with pressure tank and pressure controls. We had nothing but trouble with the controls and the tank.  in 2012 I installed a Franklin Monodrive XT and a 25gal expansion tank, has worked like a charm.

We have quite a few open loops in my area. I haven't heard any complaints. Most I talk to Like them. Most common I hear about is Goulds. Initial price is more but are we not used to hearing about that?

Thank you for lending your experiences; it's helpful to know people are getting decent mileage out of (some of) the ECM pumps.
